Next-Gen Holdouts: How to Get the Best Deal on Your Next Gaming Console

Nov 13, 2014 02:17PM ● By Erin Frisch

If somehow you have resisted the temptation to buy a next-gen console, your willpower is to be commended. Not everyone can resist the allure of a new console the year it comes out as seen by the 10 million PlayStation 4 units sold worldwide and estimated 5 million Xbox One units, according to ExtremeTech.

Consoles tend to have inflated prices when they first come out, and conventional wisdom claims it's usually best to wait a year to get the best price and best release of a new console. That being said, here's a look at some of the best deals available for the most popular next-gen consoles.

Xbox One

If the recent “Titanfall” and Xbox One bundle didn't convince you to buy an Xbox, perhaps the newest offering will—Kotaku reports that the newest Amazon Xbox One bundle comes with “Assassin's Creed Unity” and “Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag” as well as a Kinect and “Dance Central Spotlight” for just under $500. This bundle also is offered without the Kinect for significantly less.

If “Assassin's Creed” isn't your type of game, the Xbox One Limited Edition “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” bundle is currently available for pre-order and will include a terabyte hard drive, chat headset, Day Zero Edition full download of the new “Call of Duty” game and a stockpile of free weapons, skins and armor in-game. Microsoft is releasing this bundle November 3, presumably in an attempt to close the widening gap between them and Sony before the holiday season.

PlayStation 4

The PS4 is overtaking the world as the most popular next-gen console, and if you've held out this long you might not be able to much longer. One currently available bundle is the “Destiny” Console Bundle, which includes a Glacier White console and controller, 500 GB hard drive and a special edition of “Destiny” that comes with exclusive maps and missions.

It is hard to tell whether Sony will offer a substantially discounted version of their console this holiday season, but the special edition “Destiny” bundle might crack even the most patient PlayStation fan. After all, Forbes reports that “Destiny” sold $500 million on day one and is the fastest selling video game IP of all time. It could very well be another year before such a good deal comes along, so now might be the best chance for a while to buy.

Wii U

If Nintendo's Wii U is the next-gen console you have your eye on, but the price is too high, you may want to steal yourself another year. GamrReview claims that Nintendo has been selling Wii U units at a loss this year and is more likely to offer a special bundle at the current price point than they are to discount the console.

GameStop is currently pitching pre-orders on a “Super Smash Bros” bundle, which includes a copy of the new “Super Smash Bros” and a GameCube style controller and adapter; however, the Wii U console is not included. While there might not be an unbeatable bargain bundle on the Wii U this year, there are many great titles available in bundles such as the “Legend of Zelda Wind Waker” HD re-release, “New Super Mario Bros U” and “Super Luigi U” bundle.

Which gaming unit are you inclined to buy this holiday season?
